INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ECOTOURISM - IYE 2002

The United Nations (UN) has nominated the year 2002 as the International Year of
Ecotourism (see below for details of the resolution). The aim of the nomination is
to encourage co-operation among governments, international and regional
organisations and non government organisations to achieve the aims of Agenda 21
in promoting development that is integrated with protection of the environment. In
recognition of the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable tourism,
the UN General Assembly stressed the need for the principles of sustainable
development to be incorporated into the tourism industry.
