Project Summary

  • N.pompilius morphology varies between isolated reef locations
  • Population of nautilus can be estimated and is susceptible to overfishing
  • ‘Stress’ markings occur naturally, but infrequently, in the same form as in aquarium held animals

Future directions

  • Characterise morphological and genetic variations between nautilus populations of GBR and Coral Sea sites
  • Locate juvenile habitats of Nautilus at Osprey Reef
  • Identify sex and age partitioning of N. pompilius at Osprey Reef
  • Identify home range and movement patterns within N.pompilius populations
  • Propose management options for nautilus fishing

Acknowledgements

  • To Undersea Explorer for funding the project.

  • To the Undersea Explorer researchers and crew, past and present, for intrepid early morning and late evening sampling efforts.
